02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Thick-walled kitchens and living rooms centre on a hearth and long table, with deep window reveals, arched storage recesses, and direct passages to a shaded court or working garden.
- materials
- Rough lime plaster, dark volcanic stone, terracotta tile, chestnut beams, olive wood, wrought iron, linen, cane, glazed ceramic, and worn marble retain useful age and regional geology.
- furniture
- Long scrubbed tables, ladder-back and woven chairs, wall cupboards, benches, kneading boards, and compact work stands favour sturdy repairable construction over decorative matching.
- lighting
- Small shuttered openings and deep reveals temper southern light, joined by simple iron pendants, ceramic lamps, candles, and the shifting glow of a masonry cooking hearth.
- decoration
- Copper pans, storage jars, striped linen, dried herbs, devotional images, and blue or green glazed pottery animate working walls without obscuring their limewash and stone.
