02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Compact rooms use deep thresholds, rounded internal corners, wall niches, and built-in benches, with direct openings joining domestic space to a shaded court or terrace.
- materials
- Lime plaster, local fieldstone, reed ceilings, rough timber, woven rush, cotton, wool, terracotta, and glazed ceramic withstand salt air and seasonal occupation.
- furniture
- Plaster platforms, simple timber tables, rush-seated chairs, storage chests, and loose striped cushions provide durable utility without crowding narrow rooms.
- lighting
- Small deep-set openings and blue shutters control hard Aegean sun, while plain ceramic pendants and wall lamps give gentle localized evening light.
- decoration
- Cobalt-painted doors, striped weaving, clay jars, baskets, and a few maritime objects punctuate white surfaces with colour tied directly to regional making.
