02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Thick-walled rooms open through deep arches to planted patios, with built-in perimeter seating and short shaded passages creating layered indoor–outdoor thresholds.
- materials
- Lime plaster, terracotta tile, chestnut beams, hand-painted ceramic, wrought iron, woven rush, linen, and glazed earthenware carry the marks of regional craft.
- furniture
- Rush-seated chairs, carved timber chests, low tables, plaster benches, and simple stools keep furnishings durable, movable, and closely scaled to the room.
- lighting
- Hard sunlight is filtered through courts, shutters, and deep reveals, while pierced iron lanterns and wall sconces provide warm localized evening light.
- decoration
- Striped woven cushions, blue-and-green tile bands, clay vessels, devotional objects, and citrus or olive foliage concentrate colour below whitewashed walls.
