02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Rooms and covered passages gather around a protected court, with thick piers, small openings, raised platforms, and broad shaded edges supporting cooking, work, welcome, and evening rest.
- materials
- Compacted earth, banco plaster, timber poles, laterite, woven grass, leather, indigo cotton, carved wood, clay, and hammered metal create thermal mass and repairable tactile surfaces.
- furniture
- Low timber beds, woven mats, carved stools, portable tables, storage baskets, and built-in earthen ledges allow the room to change purpose throughout the day and season.
- lighting
- Roof overhangs, deep doorways, small punched openings, courtyard reflection, and portable lanterns turn intense sun into layered amber shade and cool interior contrast.
- decoration
- Incised plaster, indigo cloth, striped weaving, calabash vessels, pottery, and a few repeated geometric motifs carry identity through useful objects rather than applied ornament.
