02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- High-ceilinged salons align double doors with verandas and internal passages, while open transoms, flexible furniture groups, and permeable fretwork maintain ventilation through the deep plan.
- materials
- Painted local timber, turned wood, pierced fretwork, cement tile, masonry, cane, mahogany, cotton, linen, coloured glass, and corrugated metal express both craft precision and weathered resilience.
- furniture
- Cane rockers, carved side chairs, small mahogany tables, daybeds, painted cupboards, and light upholstered settees can move easily as breeze, shade, and patterns of gathering change.
- lighting
- Tall shuttered doors, open transoms, veranda shade, coloured panes, ceiling fans, and pendant or table lamps send lively patterned light across timber walls and tiled floors.
- decoration
- Coral and green paint, botanical fretwork, patterned cement tile, embroidered cloth, tropical foliage, family-scale pictures, and glazed vessels create rhythm without sealing the architecture.
