02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Balanced furniture groups sit within plainly proportioned rooms, with clear axes, tall windows, and enough open floor to preserve the calm architectural rhythm.
- materials
- Painted pine, lime or distemper finishes, pale plank floors, linen, wool, porcelain, gilt wood, and occasional marble keep the palette luminous and economical.
- furniture
- Oval-backed chairs, compact settees, pedestal tables, glazed cabinets, and slender consoles use carved classical detail softened by grey or cream paint.
- lighting
- Cool northern daylight reflects across pale surfaces, joined by modest crystal chandeliers, paired candle sconces, and ceramic stove glow.
- decoration
- Laurel swags, fluting, small profile portraits, simple striped textiles, and a few gilded accents articulate the room without filling it.
