02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- A single high room gathers sleeping, reception, and storage around an open mat-covered floor, with the doorway and principal posts establishing orientation.
- materials
- Hardwood posts, reed walls, pandanus matting, sennit lashings, grass thatch, barkcloth, and coconut fibre create an expressive breathable structure.
- furniture
- Floor mats, barkcloth rolls, low timber headrests, baskets, and portable storage preserve flexibility and keep the massive frame visually dominant.
- lighting
- A broad doorway and porous wall layers filter humid island daylight beneath the deep thatch, revealing lashings and softly modelled timber posts.
- decoration
- Sennit binding patterns, woven mats, barkcloth, and carefully finished structural junctions integrate ornament directly with construction and use.
