02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- A large sunken room contains family platforms, hearths, storage, and work zones, reached through roof openings that limit exposure to severe coastal weather.
- materials
- Driftwood, whalebone, stone, turf, grass thatch, hide, woven fibre, and earth create a low insulated envelope in a treeless island landscape.
- furniture
- Raised sleeping platforms, hide bedding, woven mats, storage racks, baskets, lamps, and tools keep the central shared floor clear.
- lighting
- Roof entries and smoke openings admit narrow shafts of cold maritime light while lamps and hearths create low warm pools below ground.
- decoration
- Woven grass, stitched hides, carved tools, structural bone, and orderly storage provide visual character through exact subsistence craft.
