02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- A central hearth anchors the principal timber room, with fixed benches, work surfaces, storage, and sleeping areas arranged against the enclosing walls.
- materials
- Heavy timber, fieldstone, turf, driftwood, wool, iron, and carved wood create a durable room protected by an insulating vegetated roof.
- furniture
- Driftwood benches, a plain table, storage chests, low stools, carved vessels, and textile bundles preserve an open working centre around the fire.
- lighting
- A tiny window and roof opening admit salt-grey daylight through smoky air, while the open hearth warms blackened rafters and occupied surfaces.
- decoration
- Wool cloth, carved utensils, timber grain, iron tools, and the dark roof structure provide restrained texture shaped by domestic use.
