02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- A clear central aisle leads from porch to rear wall, with named carved ancestors, woven panels, and low gathering positions arranged along both sides.
- materials
- Carved timber, paint, flax fibre, woven tukutuku, reed lining, timber boards, and mats unite structure, genealogy, surface, and communal use.
- furniture
- Flax mats, low perimeter seating, folded bedding, small presentation tables, and portable ceremonial objects keep the ancestral wall sequence visible.
- lighting
- Daylight enters primarily through the porch and front openings, travelling along the central aisle while side walls and rafters remain richly shadowed.
- decoration
- Poupou carvings, red-black-white kōwhaiwhai, tukutuku panels, and the repeated rhythm of rafters form an integrated and culturally specific narrative system.
