02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- A compact circular room places sleeping, storage, and sitting around the curved wall, with built-in niches preserving an open centre beneath the conical roof.
- materials
- Earth, clay plaster, timber, bamboo, thatch, inset mirror, pigment, embroidered cotton, and woven fibre form a resilient light-on-mass construction.
- furniture
- A low charpoy, stools, storage chests, floor cushions, vessels, and built-in ledges follow the wall and keep the small interior adaptable.
- lighting
- Warm desert light enters through the low doorway and small openings, flashing across inset mirrors while the thick walls and roof maintain a cool interior.
- decoration
- Sculpted lipan kaam relief, small mirror pieces, ochre bands, embroidered textiles, and shaped niches integrate ornament with the earthen wall surface.
