02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Open-sided pavilions face planted courts and walled compounds, with raised floors, shaded edges, and separate activity zones supporting airflow and everyday ritual.
- materials
- Teak and other local timbers, alang-alang thatch, volcanic stone, terracotta, rattan, bamboo, woven grass, cotton, and hand-dyed ikat supply durable tactile layers.
- furniture
- Low timber daybeds, carved benches, rattan lounge chairs, simple slab tables, woven stools, and storage chests maintain a relaxed relationship to the floor and garden.
- lighting
- Broad eaves and open walls filter strong daylight; woven pendants, oil-lamp forms, and low shaded lanterns gather warm light beneath the high roof after dusk.
- decoration
- Carved posts, temple textiles, ikat cushions, woven baskets, earthen vessels, and tropical planting enrich the structural rhythm without enclosing the pavilion.
