02 Field note
How the room is composed
- layout
- Rooms and covered passages wrap a central open courtyard, with broad verandas, raised thresholds, deep roof edges, and connected work and gathering zones sustaining shade and airflow.
- materials
- Carved local hardwood, laterite, lime plaster, terracotta roof tile, polished red oxide, cane, coir, cotton, bell metal, and brass carry humidity and repeated use.
- furniture
- Cane-backed plantation chairs, low chests, solid timber benches, compact tables, hanging swings, and wall shelves sit comfortably along the protected courtyard edge.
- lighting
- The open court, shaded colonnades, timber shutters, small glass lamps, and tall brass oil-lamp forms create changing bands of monsoon daylight and warm local glow.
- decoration
- Brass vessels, woven mats, carved brackets, dark ceramics, flower garlands, and lush courtyard planting enrich the house without obscuring its structural rhythm.
